First World War
To mark the centenary of the beginning of the First World War we interviewed local people to record the experiences of those who lived through the war years of 1914 to 1918 in St Neots.
The First World War was a shocking catastrophe for Europe and the world. It’s estimated nine million people died in combat and a further seven million civilians died as a result of the war. The population across the world was dramatically affected through the loss of family, as well as starvation, revolution and disease. An influenza epidemic, which swept the world from 1918 to 1920 actually killed more people than died fighting in the war.
