School children in costume at the Museum

If anything could finally banish the fusty, dusty image some people still have of museums, then it would be spending a day over the school holidays in one of your local museums.

Here at St. Neots, over 200 children visited over the Easter holidays - often with parents or grandparents in tow, and completed our Easter egg-hunt quiz around the building. Many of them also took part in our 'egg-painting' workshop - a one day family drop-in event.

School holidays are a busy time for our volunteers - both for 'desk' volunteers who welcome visitors at the museum's reception desk, and those who help with workshops and other children's activities. But the museum needs volunteers all year round - without them we would not be able to open the 5 days a week, all year, which we currently do, or put on the great variety of exhibitions and activities which make up the museum's regular programme.

Museum volunteers are also involved in a number of other roles in the museum - helping with maintenance work, with schools sessions, and with cataloguing and taking care of the museum collections, as well as taking responsible roles on our Management Committee and as Trustees of this independent museum, which is also a registered charity.

We are very proud of the work our volunteers do, and the skills that they bring to it. But we need more of them! In particular, because of a re-organisation in September, when the District Council's Tourist Information Centre will be leaving the Museum premises, we need to double our rota of 'desk' volunteers.

Can you help us? If you enjoy meeting and working with people of all sorts, and perhaps also have an interest in history and your local area, you would certainly enjoy the work.
